On June 9, 2025, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, with the support of the Korea Foundation, hosted a private breakfast roundtable at the Rideau Club in Ottawa. The discussion focused on advancing Canada–Korea security co-operation in the Indo-Pacific.
Moderated by Senior Fellow Jonathan Berkshire Miller, and featuring a presentation by Senior Fellow Richard Shimooka, the event convened a select group of policy analysts, defence experts, and senior officials to assess pressing regional security issues. Topics included North Korea’s continued provocations, great power competition, procurement, and emerging hybrid threats.
Attendees explored practical avenues for bilateral collaboration on defence coordination, reflecting the growing convergence between Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and South Korea’s expanding security footprint.
The discussion underscored the critical importance of deepening co-operation between Canada and the Republic of Korea, two like-minded democracies committed to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
